Bass Strait Islands

Day 1 (L,D) MELBOURNE, TWELVE APOSTLES, KING ISLAND
Departing from Essendon Airport at 10:30 AM on our comfort-plus Alliance Fokker 50 charter aircraft, we fly along the coast to the Twelve Apostles and the Cape Otway Lighthouse. Then return so that passengers on both sides of the aircraft enjoy views of these famous icons. During the morning flight passengers in aisle seats swap with passengers in window seats to maximise viewing (acceptance of this is a condition of travel). Refreshments are served as we fly. Heading south we continue to King Island, fly over Cape Wickham Lighthouse landing at the main town of Currie.

A local coach awaits and, following a short introductory tour of the township of Currie, we enjoy a barbecue lunch featuring King Island meats. During the afternoon we learn a little of the kelp industry, spend some time browsing in the town, visit the award-winning King Island Dairy – taste the large variety of tempting cheeses, purchase if you wish – and visit the village of Grassy. Dinner tonight overlooking the ocean includes crayfish as a main course and is a highlight of our holiday.

Day 2 (B,L,D) KING ISLAND, WYNYARD, FLINDERS ISLAND
Following breakfast this morning we rejoin our aircraft for the short journey to the Tasmanian mainland and the coastal town of Wynyard. Enjoy a tour of Table Cape, famous for its tulip farms, ablaze with colour in Spring. Lunch today at Wynyard, then our journey continues as we fly along the coast then pass over Franklin Pass, the wreck of the Farsund and Cape Barren Island on route to Flinders Island and the main airport near Whitemark. Our local Flinders Island guides await and we commence a delightful journey of scenic exploration of the island. Visit the town of Whitemark and the beautiful coastal beaches at Trousers Point. Following arriving at our accommodation for the night we meet again for dinner together at the Furneaux Hotel.

Day 3 (B,L) FLINDERS ISLAND, MELBOURNE
Following a hearty breakfast we visit Emita/Port Davies and Wybalenna, site of the settlement of the Tasmanian Aboriginal settlement between 1833 and 1847. Morning cuppa at Allports Beach and then to the Furneaux Museum, a fascinating country museum. Enjoy a walk on the beach at Killiekrankie, home of Killiecrankie “diamonds”, a form of white topez. Lunch today at JJ’s on the Bay. During the afternoon we visit Palana, where evidence of WW2 surveillance is still visible. From Palana Beach we explore North East River and the beautiful Sawyers Beach. Walk along the beach and enjoy an afternoon cuppa. Sadly it’s time to return to the airport where our Fokker 50 awaits. We depart Flinders Island at 4:30 PM to fly over Bass Strait. We fly “low and slow” over Wilsons Promontory and, subject to air traffic control, may enjoy a special “low and slow” view of Melbourne prior to landing at Essendon Airport. Metropolitan home/hotel/airport transfers conclude a most enjoyable weekend Bass Strait Island holiday.
