Echuca and the Murray

Day 1 (L,D) MELBOURNE, TAHBILK WINERY, SHEPPARTON, MOAMA

We depart Melbourne with a leisurely drive into central Victoria and enjoy a morning tea stop along the way. We arrive at the historic Tahbilk Winery Wetlands Café for lunch, its tranquil setting located in the Nagambie Lakes region. This afternoon we visit the interesting Shepparton Heritage Centre before the short journey to the Mercure Port of Echuca, our home for four nights.
Day 2 (B,L,D) TORRUMBARRY, PORT OF ECHUCA

A relaxing day as we explore Echuca, once the main transport hub for a huge area served by the Murray, Murrumbidgee and Darling Rivers. We take a short drive to Torrumbarry Weir and Lock. Originally built in 1923, we visit the interpretive centre displaying the history of the weir and lock. We retrace our steps back to Echuca and visit the Port of Echuca, lunch as we cruise the Murray on an authentic paddle steamer. Free time this afternoon to browse in the craft and antique shops or relax back at our hotel.
Day 3 (B,L,D) DENILIQUIN

Our journey today takes us into southern NSW, to Deniliquin and the Peppin Heritage Centre. This museum is dedicated to the Peppin family who developed, in the 1800’s, a Merino sheep that could withstand and thrive in the harsh Australian conditions. Lunch here in this delightful country town before our easy drive back to Echuca.
Day 4 (B,L,D) BARMAH WETLANDS

This morning we visit nearby Barmah and join a river cruise with a certified eco guide providing commentary about the hundreds of water birds species, animals and native fish that have made the Barmah wetlands and forest their home. After an interesting cruise we enjoy lunch at the Barmah Pub before returning to Echuca.
Day 5 (B,L) RUSHWORTH, MELBOURNE

Homeward bound, we stop for morning tea and a visit at the Kyabram Wildlife Park. On to the historical town of Rushworth, where we tour the Rushworth Museum. Time for lunch and a browse amongst the historical buildings before returning to Melbourne late afternoon, completing a most enjoyable stayput holiday on the Murray.
