Twin Coasts

Day 1 (L,D) MELBOURNE, MAFFRA, LAKES ENTRANCE
Our twin stayput commences as we head east from Melbourne, stopping for morning tea in Drouin. We arrive at the charming Duart Homestead in Maffra for lunch before viewing the Pino Deriu gemstone and mineral collection in the restored Court House. Later we arrive in the seaside town of Lakes Entrance and our home for the next five nights, the Esplanade Resort.
Day 2 (B,L,D) BAIRNSDALE, PAYNESVILLE, RAYMOND ISLAND
Bairnsdale, situated on the Mitchell River which then flows into the extensive Gippsland Lakes system is home to the Krowathunkooloong Cultural Museum, which showcases the history and culture of the Koorie people. We then travel onto the charming village of Paynesville, surrounded by lakes on three sides. Lunch at one of the delightful waterfront cafes here. We take the ferry to Raymond Island across the McMillan Strait, one of the best places in Victoria to spot koalas and home to over 60 bird species and many species of ground orchids and wildflowers.
Day 3 (B,L,D) METUNG, LAKES CRUISE
This morning we travel to the picturebook village of Metung, stretching along a narrow sandy peninsula on the Gippsland Lakes, stopping on the way at Brigadoon Walnut Farm. Take a stroll along the boardwalk before lunch. We return to Lakes Entrance’s Post Office Jetty and board the Thunderbird – a fully enclosed cruise boat. Enjoy a two hour scenic cruise, spotting dolphins and seals and other wildlife along the way.
Day 4 (B,L,D) WYANGA PARK WINERY, ORBOST
We travel to Orbost where we visit the tourist centre based in the historic Slab Hut, built in 1872 and also the Snowy River Opals. On the way back we take a scenic drive past Lake Tyers. Our lunch destination is the delightful Wyanga Park Winery located on the north arm of The Lakes.
Day 5 (B,L,D) NYERIMILANG HOMESTEAD, BUCHAN
We begin the day with a visit to the lovely Nyerimilang Homestead built in 1884, enjoy a morning cuppa in the gardens of this picturesque setting. We then head north along the Great Alpine Road to Bruthen on the Tambo River, for lunch surrounded by temperate rainforest. In the afternoon we continue to Buchan, famous for its underground limestone caves. Time here to explore the area.
Day 6 (B,L,D) ROSEDALE, WARRAGUL, MELBOURNE
Departing for Melbourne we stop in the quaint village of Rosedale for morning tea. We continue to Warragul, take in the 19th century architecture and visit the heritage listed Warragul Station and Shire Hall. Following an enjoyable lunch we return to Melbourne and check in to the Quality Hotel Batman’s Hill on Collins with some time to explore the CBD prior to dinner.
Day 7 (B,L,D) MELBOURNE, WARRNAMBOOL
Today we travel to Anglesea and, following morning tea, enjoy the awe inspiring Great Ocean Road on our journey to our luncheon destination, Apollo Bay. In the afternoon we continue along the Great Ocean Road to Lavers Hill, before heading inland to Chapple Vale, Cobden and Terang. Arriving late afternoon, we settle into our accommodation for four nights, the Quality Suites Deep Blue Warrnambool, with some time to relax prior to dinner.
Day 8 (B,L,D) TWELVE APOSTLES, PORT CAMPBELL
For millions of years the forces of nature have worn away the coastline in the Port Campbell area resulting in a rugged coastline with many landforms, the most famous being the Twelve Apostles. This morning we journey along this spectacular coastline, visiting Cheeseworld for morning tea. As we continue, we view Loch Ard Gorge, the famous Apostles and Gibsons Steps. Lunch in Port Campbell before returning to Warrnambool where there is time to enjoy a walk along Lady Bay, browse amongst the shops, or simply relax in your studio, the choice is yours.
Day 9 (B,L,D) PORTLAND
This morning we travel to Portland, Victoria’s first settlement. Visit the Botanic Gardens, view the bluestone church of St Stephens built in 1824 and enjoy a ride on the historic Portland Tram. Following lunch we drive around the Portland Alcoa Smelter. The smelter is on 500 hectares of land and, with 400 hectares returned as wetlands, it has come to be known as the “smelter in the park”. Following dinner, enjoy the spectacular show Shipwrecked at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village.
Day 10 (B,L,D) WARRNAMBOOL
Today we return to Flagstaff Hill. This recreated maritime village offers the visitor an interactive journey through Victoria’s early maritime history, including the tragic tale of the Loch Ard shipwreck. Flagstaff Hill combines 1870’s charm and heritage with the most modern of multi-media technology to produce an historic exhibition and show with a difference. Lunch at Flagstaff Hill before we spend some time exploring the Fletcher Jones Gardens. The remainder of the afternoon is at your leisure.
Day 11 (B,L) WARRNAMBOOL, GEELONG, MELBOURNE
This morning we begin our journey home, travelling inland to Geelong where we enjoy a pleasant farewell lunch before arriving back into Melbourne completing a most enjoyable coastal getaways.
