Day 1 (L,D) HOME, ADELAIDE, PORT WAKEFIELD, EDITHBURGH
Following metropolitan home/hotel pick up we transfer to Melbourne Airport for the short flight to Adelaide. Interstate passengers may fly direct to Adelaide where they are met at Adelaide Airport. Departing Adelaide we travel north to Port Wakefield at the northern end of St Vincent’s Gulf. Then on to the Yorke Peninsula, continuing through Ardrossan and Port Vincent prior to arriving at our home for two nights, Edithburgh Seaside Motel.
Day 2 (B,L,D) MARION BAY, STENHOUSE BAY, WEST CAPE LIGHTHOUSE
A relaxing and scenic day as we visit Marion Bay, Stenhouse Bay and West Cape Lighthouse – magnificent coastal scenery. View the Wattle Point Wind Farm prior to arriving back in Edithburgh.
Day 3 (B,L,D) EDITHBURGH, YORKETOWN, MINLATON, MOONTA, PORT AUGUSTA
We travel to Yorketown, once a major salt harvesting area, and pass through Minlaton, “barley capital of the world”. On to Moonta, in the 1860‘s one of our richest copper mining towns. Many of the historic features are now National Trust properties. Later in the day we continue to our overnight home, Standpipe Golf Motor Inn, Port Augusta.
Day 4 (B,L,D) PORT AUGUSTA, WUDINNA
Visit the award-winning Wadlata Outback Centre, an outstanding depiction of outback life in earlier times and the original Ghan. We travel the Eyre Highway to Iron Knob, take a guided tour of the iron ore mine, view ironstone jewellery, purchase if you wish. Then on to Kimba, enjoy a stroll around the many exhibits in the Historical Museum. We continue to Wudinna and our home for two nights, Gawler Ranges Motel.
Day 5 (B,L,D) WUDINNA, GAWLER RANGES, STREAKY BAY
A highlight of our holiday today as Gawler Ranges Wilderness Safaris take us through the site of one of the world’s largest single volcanic eruptions, 1,500 million years ago. Visit an old river system, Sturt’s Lake, the “Old Paney” shearing shed, with lunch at Kaolay Hut, an old musterer’s hut. Spectacular country indeed. In the afternoon we visit Mattera Track, and the amazing Pildappa Rock. This towering granite formation rivals the more famous Wave Rock in Western Australia.
Day 6 (B,L,D) WUDINNA, STREAKY BAY, VENUS BAY, COFFIN BAY, PORT LINCOLN
This morning enjoy a morning cuppa at Streaky Bay, named by Matthew Flinders, although first sighted by the Dutch in 1627. We follow the coast of the Eyre Peninsula to Murphy’s Haystack, ancient wind worn granite rocks, reputed to be 1,500 million years old. We continue on to Venus Bay, taking in the glorious views from Needle Eye Lookout of the towering cliffs and booming surf rolling in from the Bight. A leisurely journey as we continue to Coffin Bay, a holiday and fishing village and one of the most beautiful estuaries in Australia, close to Port Lincoln. Home for three nights, the Port Lincoln Hotel. Enjoy harbour views and deluxe rooms.
Day 7 (B,L,D) PORT LINCOLN
A pleasant morning as we enjoy Whalers Way scenic drive, visiting Flinders Well, Sleaford Bay sand dunes and picturesque Fishery Bay – breathtaking coastal scenery, followed by lunch in Port Lincoln. During the afternoon visit the Civic Hall art and community complex. This building was re-developed in 2001 and includes two art galleries and a 500 seat theatre together with several community function rooms. Time also to browse the shops or stroll along the picturesque foreshore.
Day 8 (B,L,D) PORT LINCOLN
This morning enjoy an aquaculture and sightseeing cruise. View the sea lions, visit a local aquaculture farm. Hand feed the huge tuna if you wish. Lunch today overlooking the Marina. Later we visit the Alex Stenross Maritime Museum which houses many exhibits from “clinker” hull boats to fishing and maritime memorabilia.
Day 9 (B,L,D) PORT LINCOLN, WHYALLA, PORT AUGUSTA, CLARE
From Port Lincoln we journey on the east coast of Eyre Peninsula to Cowell, home of Australia’s only commercial jade mine. View green and black jade, purchase if you wish. On to Whyalla, an important steel making city, with lunch at Port Augusta. During the afternoon we continue through Wilmington and Gladstone to the Clare Valley. Home tonight, Clare Country Club.
Day 10 (B,L) CLARE, ADELAIDE, HOME
This morning we return to Adelaide, enjoy a short tour of this beautiful city, then to Adelaide Airport for our afternoon flights home. Lunch before our flight. Melbourne passengers will be transferred to metropolitan home/hotels; interstate passengers may fly direct to their home state or via Melbourne, depending on airline schedules. Thus concludes a most relaxing and enjoyable holiday to one of South Australia’s most scenic yet less visited areas.
