Norfolk Island was the first Young at Heart overseas holiday, around fifteen years ago. It was, and is, “a speck in the ocean, but home to the friendliest people on earth”.
A special feature of a Young at Heart Norfolk holiday is that your hosts are long term Norfolk resident Bev Wheeler, and Bill Adams, a 5th generation Pitcairn Island descendant. Young at Heart sends an escort as well to cover travel arrangements and to make sure everyone comes home!
Just five kilometres one way, eight the other, this extinct volcanic outcrop is a mere speck in the ocean. Captain Cook was the first European to see Norfolk Island. In 1774 he claimed it for Great Britain and described it as “paradise”. In the following years, this tiny uninhabited paradise became home to two convict settlements. The last convict was moved to Tasmania in 1856.
The famous “Mutiny on the Bounty” in 1791 saw Captain Bligh and some crew set adrift and Fletcher Christian and the remainder of the crew, with Tahitian girlfriends, sail to Pitcairn Island.
In 1856, Queen Victoria resettled the Pitcairn Islanders from their now overcrowded island to Norfolk Island. Descendants of over one third of those original settlers remain on the Island today.
Norfolk has its own Legislative Assembly, Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Services. Norfolk currency is Australian dollars, cars are right-hand drive and the “local wave” is legendary. Norfolk has no stress, traffic congestion, unemployment or snakes. Captain Cook was right … this truly is paradise!
Approximately 1,600 men, women and children call Norfolk Island home and close to 40,000 visitors each year enjoy their hospitality, many returning again and again to this beautiful island, 3.5 hours from Australia, home of the friendliest people on earth.
The most relaxing holiday you could imagine. The locals are friendly and laid back. The island is beautiful and full of history.
