The Road Less Travelled

Day 1 (L,D) MELBOURNE, BENDIGO, SWAN HILL
Departing Melbourne we travel north to Bendigo, viewing the city from a unique perspective as we board the Vintage Talking Tram. A surface tour of the Central Deborah Gold Mine concludes an interesting morning. Following lunch we continue through Kerang towards Swan Hill reaching our home for tonight, the Comfort Inn Campbell.
Day 2 (B,L,D) SWAN HILL, WENTWORTH, MILDURA
A leisurely travel day as we depart for Robinvale for morning tea before crossing the Murray into NSW. At Wentworth we visit Lock 10, adjacent to the convergence of the Murray and Darling Rivers, prior to lunch. We tour the historic Wentworth Gaol before continuing to Mildura and the Mercure Hotel, our home for two nights.
Day 3 (B,L,D) MILDURA, MURRAY RIVER CRUISE, RIO VISTA
This morning we relax as we cruise along the Murray River enjoying morning tea as the red gums glide past. Lunch in Mildura followed by a visit to Rio Vista Historic House and the Old Mildura Homestead. Time to stroll along the river bank in the afternoon.
Day 4 (B,L,D) MILDURA, BROKEN HILL
This morning we traverse the Silver Highway to Broken Hill. Set in the foreground of the Line of Lode, the “Silver City” offers a unique mix of outback heritage, mining industry and a flourishing artistic community. Our home for the next three nights is the Silver Haven Motor Inn.
Day 5 (B,L,D) BROKEN HILL
Our day starts with a visit to the Information Centre for an introduction to this impressive town. Nearby is the Sulphide Street and Railway Museum with its large display of old railway machinery. Then we visit the Line of Lode Miners Memorial, perched above the town with magnificent views across the landscape. In the afternoon, we visit the Pro Hart Gallery. Later we drive to the Sculpture Symposium and Living Desert nestled among the Barrier Ranges.
Day 6 (B,L,D) BROKEN HILL, SILVERTON
Visit White’s Mineral Art and Living Mining Museum where the mineral paintings are complemented with many rare mining artefacts, underground memorabilia and models of mine sites. Tour the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Following lunch we drive out to historic Silverton, featured in many movies, including Mad Max and A Town Like Alice. Here we tour the town and Gaol Museum.
Day 7 (B,L,D) BROKEN HILL, WILCANNIA, COBAR
An outback travel day as we make our way towards Cobar. En route some time to stroll the township of Wilcannia, viewing the many heritage buildings. Arriving into Cobar we stroll the Miner’s Heritage Park before arriving at our home for tonight, the Town and Country Motor Inn.
Day 8 (B,L,D) COBAR, BOURKE
We start our day with a visit to the Cobar Heritage Centre before departing for Bourke, arriving in time for lunch. During the afternoon we visit the Back O’ Bourke Exhibition Centre. Life in the outback is depicted through a number of interactive installations and multimedia displays. Our home for the next two nights, the Major Mitchell Motel.
Day 9 (B,L,D) BOURKE
Relive the old river days as we cruise the Darling River onboard the PV Jandra, a replica paddleboat built in 2000 and operated by a local family. This afternoon gain an informative insight into Bourke, its history and present day as a local guide takes us on a tour of the township and highlights.
Day 10 (B,L,D) BOURKE, cunnamulla, CHARLEVILLE
Our travels take us through the tiny townships of Enngonia and Barringun, where we cross the border into Queensland. At Cunnamulla we view the historic Railway Station, one of only three covered railway platforms in Queensland, and visit the Artesian Time Tunnel at the Cunnamulla Fella Visitor Centre where we learn the story of the Great Artesian Basin. Continuing on to Charleville we settle into our home for tonight, the Rocks Motel. This evening we take a tour of the Outback Night Sky via telescope at the Cosmos Centre.
Day 11 (B,L,D) CHARLEVILLE, MITCHELL, ROMA
Departing Charleville we travel along the Warrego Highway to Morven and on to Mitchell. We view the original Courthouse where local bushrangers, the Kenniff Brothers were committed to stand trial. We then browse the Mitchell on Manaroa Gallery before arriving into Roma to visit the Big Rig, a memorial to Australia’s oil pioneers. Our home for the night is the Roma Explorers Inn.
Day 12 (B,L,D) ROMA, MILES, TOOWOOMBA
This morning we travel to Miles, taking time to explore the Historical Village and Museum. Lunch here before departing for Toowoomba, the “City of Gardens” where we stroll the beautiful Japanese Gardens. Our overnight home is the Eastgate on the Range Motel.
Day 13 (B,L) TOOWOOMBA, BRISBANE, HOME
Following a leisurely breakfast we travel to Brisbane Airport completing our grand journey through some of Australia’s most fascinating outback regions.
