Central Gippsland (Traralgon) Stayput

Day 1 (L,D) HOME, NOOJEE, MOE, TRARALGON
Following metropolitan home/hotel pick up (interstate passengers arrive day prior) we travel via the Yarra Ranges and the picturesque townships of Woori Yallock and Powelltown. At Toorongo Falls Reserve enjoy a beautiful walk through the tall, lush forest prior to enjoying lunch in the former gold mining township of Noojee. This afternoon we travel via Hill End and Willow Grove back to the 1850’s at Old Gippstown Heritage Park in Moe. A short journey to Traralgon and our home for the next four nights, Century Inn, Traralgon.

Day 2 (B,L,D) TRARALGON, TARRA BULGA NATIONAL PARK
Today we visit the beautiful Tarra Bulga National Park in the Strzelecki Ranges, with its towering old-growth eucalyptus trees, fern filled gullies, trickling streams and waterfalls in the rainforest. Walk in an ancient beech forest with trees 1,000 years old, the track crossing a large suspension bridge. Following lunch we visit Port Albert and the Maritime Museum prior to returning to Traralgon.

Day 3 (B,L,D) HEYFIELD, GLENMAGGIE, MAFFRA, SALE
A relaxed touring day today. We travel to the township of Heyfield, home to the largest hardwood sawmill in the southern hemisphere. Morning tea on the shores of Lake Glenmaggie, view the Weir wall. Enroute to Maffra we pass through some of the richest dairying districts in Australia. Prior to lunch we view the Pino Deriu Gemstone Collection in Maffra’s restored Court House. This afternoon we visit Sale, the western gateway to the Gippsland Lakes. View local heritage sites on a town tour and enjoy the exhibitions at the Sale Art Gallery whose collections focus on the natural environment. We return to Traralgon via Rosedale, once a staging post on the Port Albert to Sale coach run.

Day 4 (B,L,D) WALHALLA, ERICA, MOONDARA STATE PARK, YALLOURN NORTH
A highlight of our week as we travel north into the foothills of the Baw Baw Ranges to the historic mountain township of Walhalla. Enjoy a journey on the restored Walhalla Goldfields Railway, gain a glimpse of daily life in the valley over a hundred years ago at the Walhalla Gold Museum and enjoy lunch in a local café. During the afternoon we travel through the timber mill township of Erica, continuing through the picturesque Moondara State Park. At Yallourn North we learn of the early days of the old town and the open cut mine at the Old Brown Coal Mine Museum. Afternoon cuppa here. The short journey back to Traralgon concludes a wonderful day.

Day 5 (B,L) MIRBOO NORTH, LEONGATHA, HOME
From Traralgon we travel south via Mirboo North stopping for morning tea, continuing to the potato growing township of Thorpdale, in the Strzelecki Ranges. Set in a former volcanic crater, the rich, volcanic soil in the region is ideal for farming. At Trafalgar we return to the Princes Highway prior to visiting Yarragon with time to browse the various antique stores and local gallery. Enjoy lunch at the Darnum Hotel before our return to Melbourne, arriving around 4:30 p.m. Metropolitan home/hotel and airport transfers complete a most enjoyable short break in Victoria’s Gippland region.
